The antique and flea market takes place every Sunday from 7 am to 1 pm.

For more than 30 years, Tongeren has been a lively city on Sunday morning, and this from early in the morning. More than 350 exhibitors and some 40 antique shops will show their best for the many visitors to the largest antiques and brocante market in the Benelux. Tongeren is an international city on Sunday morning and “the place to be” for an increasing number of Dutch, Germans, French, British and Americans. They are all looking for that “unique” piece of antique or brocant. Completing the visit to the antique and flea market with a visit to the city center or taking a cozy terrace or a tasteful restaurant is the guarantee for a successful trip.

10-point action plan:

Tongeren continually makes efforts to promote the antique market, far beyond the national borders. Under the motto ‘Oldest city in Belgium’, Tongeren is campaigning and strives to increase the number of visitors every year. The city of Tongeren has drawn up a 10-point plan to make the antiques market even more attractive.

The antique market under constant attention, at home and abroad

If Tongeren also wants to have the largest antiques and broccoli market in the coming years, sustained communication campaigns are a necessity. In the following weeks the antiques market will be promoted daily in broadcasting via Euregio with the 7 surrounding channels from the Euregion Meuse / Rhine: TVL Belgium, TVL Netherlands, Télévesdre, RTC Liège, Center TV Aachen, Center TV Cologne and BRF. In a recent BBC broadcast ‘Put your money where your mouth is’, the Tongeren antiques market was praised as the better market in its genre.

A promotional team visits other markets to warm visitors to visit our own market. The new four-language flyer was already endorsed by the promoteam and a number of exhibitors in the markets of Temploux, Ciney, Bruges, Amiens, Villeneuve Saint Georges (France), and Ardingly (England).

International publications

Tongeren is also praised for its antiques market abroad. Articles regularly appear in various professional journals, even far beyond Europe. From December 2013 the market will also be promoted in the Dutch magazine ‘Collecting’. Furthermore, publications in German and French antique magazines are on the program.

Far across the borders

A number of travel organizations from China include the Tongeren antiques market as a fixed component in their program. The Tongerse antique brochure is now also available in the Chinese language. The antique market will now be even more strongly promoted through tourism services in China. The brochure ‘Tongeren, antiques market spotted’ is now available in 5 languages (Dutch, French, German, English and Chinese) and can also be consulted.

loading and unloading

The worldwide visitors praise Tongeren for the organization of the antiques market. The authentic and the multitude of antiques and brocante offered, exhibited in a historic setting, are the basis of a successful formula. The only point of improvement is the absence of clear loading and unloading areas on the Leopoldwal. There will be a signage with clear indication signs. Anyone who has bought goods can pick them up at this location between 8 am and 1 pm and load them.

The exhibitors are the ambassadors of our antique market. The nearly 300 permanent exhibitors with a subscription are assigned a fixed location every week. Every week fifty individual exhibitors also register. These are providers who occasionally want a location on our market. The free pitches will now be allocated by lot. This way we guarantee an objective allocation of the free places.

Shopping after the antique market

Every first Sunday of the month there is a shopping Sunday in Tongeren. Shops then open their doors from 13 o’clock. Tongeren organizes fun events on these Sundays. In this way, visitors can make a full day of Tongeren. For several months, a promotional team has been active in the antiques market that distributes flyers to promote the shopping Sunday. This action is successful. The merchants noticed a marked increase in the visitors of the antiques market in the shopping public.

Culture on the market

In the summer months we also want to organize fun events on the antique market itself. Street theater and street musicians fit perfectly into the setting. This way we bring even more atmosphere to the antique market.
